THE SHORT VERSION
- The Wegovy pill is UK authorised and prescription only.
- Its food, drink and medicine-timing instructions matter.
- Authorisation does not guarantee NHS access, stock or personal suitability.
What has changed in the UK
The tablet's UK authorisation means it should no longer be described as an unapproved future treatment. The 11 June 2026 approval date is confirmed in the manufacturer's announcement and a subsequent ASA ruling. A UK patient leaflet is now available.
That answers the regulatory question, not every access question. A prescriber still needs to assess whether treatment is appropriate, and pharmacies may differ in what they can supply. Ask about the exact product, the ongoing service and current availability. Do not assume the existing NHS recommendation for injectable semaglutide automatically provides access to this tablet formulation.
Consider the routine, not just the absence of a needle
Wegovy tablets have specific instructions involving an empty stomach and a waiting period before food, drink or other oral medicines. Follow your own leaflet and ask the pharmacist to help you fit the instructions around your other treatment. This guide does not replace those instructions or provide a dosing schedule.
Think through a typical morning, especially if you work shifts or need medicines at particular times. Write down any practical difficulty before the consultation. A tablet may feel more familiar, but that alone does not establish suitability or mean that it has fewer side effects. Discuss the whole treatment plan, including follow-up.
Keep the safety and switching questions clear
Tell the prescriber about your medical history, other medicines and any existing semaglutide or weight-management treatment. Do not substitute tablets for injections or combine products yourself. Ask how a proposed switch would be supervised and how you would report problems.
Semaglutide can cause digestive side effects and has important safety warnings. Seek urgent medical help for severe, persistent abdominal pain. Sudden loss of vision or rapidly worsening eyesight needs urgent eye casualty or A&E assessment. Discuss pregnancy plans before treatment. When comparing services, look at the continuing cost and clinical support; a tablet's launch or a low advertised price is not a reason to rush a treatment decision.
