Fibre for constipation on GLP-1 medicines

Constipation can affect comfort and appetite. A gradual routine is more useful than suddenly adding large amounts of fibre or several remedies.

THE SHORT VERSION

  • Increase dietary fibre gradually and keep fluids appropriate for you.
  • Persistent constipation or severe associated symptoms needs assessment.

Build a gentle routine

NHS advice includes gradually increasing fibre, drinking fluids and allowing unhurried toilet time. Try oats at breakfast, beans in a meal or fruit you enjoy. Increase variety step by step rather than making a large change overnight.

Do not delay when you feel the urge. A footstool may make the position more comfortable. Activity within your ability can help establish a routine. If you have a fluid restriction or bowel condition, ask for tailored advice.

Know when food changes are not enough

Ask a pharmacist about a suitable laxative if simple changes do not help. Explain your medicines, how long constipation has lasted and any pain, bloating or vomiting. Do not repeatedly add products without checking how they fit together.

Severe abdominal pain, vomiting, a swollen abdomen or inability to pass wind needs urgent assessment, especially together. Do not keep adding fibre to push through these symptoms. Tell your prescriber about persistent constipation affecting eating and ask whether treatment needs review.
